Une tête XXL, l’idée qui cartonne [FR/EN]

“En août 2016, nous avons organisé le Big Face Mask Workshop à la Maker Faire de Tokyo. À l’origine, nous voulions demander aux participants d’utiliser du papier pour donner une apparence élargie de leur visage, mais cela prenait 2 heures par personne. Pour simplifier les choses, nous avons opté pour un carton à mettre sur la tête. Avec la BigFace Box, 2 secondes suffisent maintenant. Je me demande si l’on peut encore parler ‘d’atelier’ !”

Les instructions ci-dessous pour créer la boîte peuvent être adaptées à votre guise. Vous pouvez utiliser la taille de carton, le type de lentille, l’éclairage, etc. de votre choix pour obtenir le résultat désiré.

Attention : Ne pas regarder directement le soleil ou autres lumières vives lorsque la boîte est sur la tête.

 

 

 

Assembler la boîte

Rabattre les battants d’un des deux côtés du carton. Ouvrir chacun des battants de l’autre côté de façon à prolonger la hauteur de la boîte (Figure A). Disposer ensuite la boîte de manière à ce que l’ouverture soit sur le devant.

 

Faire un trou à la base du carton pour y faire rentrer la tête (Figure B). Pour un résultat visuel satisfaisant, la tête doit être éloignée de 15 cm des bords du côté ouvert de la boîte.

 

 

 

Ajuster la lentille

Selon la taille de votre lentille de Fresnel, il faudra peut-être la découper à l’aide d’un cutter pour plastique pour l’ajuster à l’ouverture de la boîte. Attention à ne pas se blesser lors de l’opération. (Je me suis coupé à trois reprises. Il est fortement recommandé de porter des gants de protection.)
Avec une lentille rectangulaire (plutôt que circulaire), il est plus aisé de la dimensionner à l’ouverture de la boîte. S’assurer de bien centrer la lentille. Pour une découpe de 5 centimètres, couper 2,5 cm de chaque côté (Figure C).

 

 

L’aspect du visage sera plus intéressant si le centre de la lentille est légèrement en retrait par rapport à l’ouverture.

 

Fixer les bandes LED

Couper le ruban de LED pour disposer de deux bandes d’une longueur légèrement inférieure au bord long de la lentille. Notre lentille mesurant 38 × 30,5 cm, nous avons fait en sorte que la longueur des bandes soit inférieure à 35,5 cm. Mesurer ensuite deux bouts de fil électrique de façon à ce qu’ils soient légèrement plus longs que le bord court de la lentille et les souder avec les deux extrémités des bandes LED (Figure D), une couleur sur la borne positive et l’autre sur la borne négative. Recouvrir les joints de soudure avec de la gaine thermorétractable pour éviter qu’ils soient arrachés et prévenir les courts-circuits. Le fil relié au boîtier de piles doit être assez long pour ne pas être en travers de l’ouverture.

Fixer une bande de ruban DEL sur chaque bord long de la face striée de la lentille. (L’aspect du visage sera plus esthétique si la face lisse de la lentille est tournée vers l’extérieur.) Il est plus pratique d’utiliser du ruban LED avec adhésif au verso, mais du double-face peut aussi être utilisé. (Il est également possible d’appliquer du ruban LED sur les parties supérieure et inférieure, comme indiqué sur la photo.)

Tout assembler

Fixer la lentille sur la boîte à l’aide de ruban adhésif, puis fixer le boîtier de piles sur la paroi intérieure de la boîte. Allumer les LED, placer la boîte sur la tête, et c’est terminé ! (Figure E). Frayeurs garanties !

Supersize Your Noggin with a Lens and Cardboard Box

 

 

We held the Big Face Mask Workshop at Maker Faire Tokyo in August 2016. Originally, we were going to have participants make a large version of their face using papercraft. However, it took 2 hours per person. As a way to make it much simpler, we decided to ask them to wear a box instead. Thanks to this idea, it only takes 2 seconds now with the Bigfacebox. I have to wonder if I can still call this a workshop.

This is not the only way to do it. Please feel free to choose your box size, lens type, lighting, and such to get your desired result.

Caution: Please do not look directly into the sun or other bright lights when wearing the face enlargement box.

Assemble the Box

Close one set of flaps. Tape the other set of flaps open so that they extend the height of the box (Figure A). Then lay the box down so the opening is on the side.

 

Make a hole on the bottom where you can insert your head (Figure B). Positioning your head about 6″ away from the opening makes for an interesting face.

 

 

Fit the Lens

Depending on the size of your Fresnel lens, you may need to cut it to fit the opening of your box using an acrylic cutter. Please be careful not to cut your hands when cutting the lens’ cross-section. (I cut mine three times. Work gloves are highly recommended.)

If you get a rectangular lens rather than a circular lens you will have less work to size it to your box opening. Make sure you preserve the center of the lens. If you need to cut off two inches, cut one inch off each side (Figure C).

 

 

Your face will look more interesting when the lens’ center is set slightly back from the opening.

Attach the LED Strips

Cut two lengths of the LED strip that measure slightly less than the long edge of the lens. Our lens was 15″×12½”, so we made the length of the strips less than 14″. Then measure two lengths of wire slightly longer than the short edge of the lens, and solder together the two ends of the LED strips (Figure D), one color to the positive pads and the other to negative pads. Cover the solder joints with heat-shrink tubing to protect against pulls and shorts. The wire to the battery holder should be long enough to be out of the way.

 

 

Attach one strip of LED tape on each long edge of the lens’ ridged side (Your face will look better if the smooth side of the lens faces out). LED tape with adhesive on the back is most convenient, but you can use double-sided tape, too. (You can also put an LED strip on the top and bottom, as shown in the photo.)

Put It All Together

Attach the lens to the box with adhesive tape, then attach the battery holder to the inside of the box. Turn on the LEDs, put the box over your head, and it’s complete (Figure E). Let’s scare some people !
